Popular XRP community figure Vet recounts how an anonymous user paid an outrageous fee of about 300,000 XRP on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) back in 2017.
According to data shared by Vet, the unknown user paid about 300,000 XRP in four transactions in 2017. Each transaction costs about 73,238 XRP, 75,742 XRP, 74,903 XRP, and 74,068 XRP, bringing the total to 297,951 XRP.
Ouch! In 2017 someone paid in 4x transactions around 300,000 XRP in fees.
Worth today over $700,000 .
It's the highest fee's ever paid on the XRPL.

Highest XRP Ledger Fee
While the fee’s value was not much at the time due to XRP’s low price, Vet stated it was worth about $700,000 as of yesterday. This figure was $65,549 at the time the transactions were made. The community figure stressed that the fee represents the highest fee ever paid on the XRP Ledger.
A quick glance at XRPScan shows that the transactions occurred on September 11, 2017, at 07:24 a.m. (UTC). The transactions, initiated by an unknown address, ‘rKLPB…57UGn’, were made to cancel offers on the XRP Ledger.
On September 11, 2017, the user initiated five ‘offer cancel’ transactions. Only one of the five transactions cost a fraction of XRP, about 0.21 XRP. The user paid hefty fees of at least 73,238 XRP for the remaining four transactions.
Potential Reasons Behind the Mistake
Explaining a possible reason behind the development, Vet suggested that a bot made the transaction on behalf of the user. During the transaction process, Vet said the bot might have ‘fumbled some fields’ in the account script, resulting in outrageous fees.
The community figure stated that the XRPL is designed to accept any fee above the minimum requirement of a few drops of XRP. As a result, the network will process any transaction irrespective of whether the fee is outrageous, as in the 2017 incident.
It is very rare to see users pay extremely high fees for transactions on the XRP Ledger. This is because the network’s transaction fees are negligible, ranking among the lowest in the crypto industry.
Users can sometimes pay just a fraction of XRP to move massive value on-chain. A case in point was when Ripple and several entities paid a negligible fee of $0.0013 to move $1.88 billion worth of XRP on XRPL.
Despite the costly mistake, Vet confirmed that the wallet was still active. It currently has a balance of 19.80 XRP, with its last transaction recorded on June 28, 2023.
