Prime Minister Narendra Modi, co-chairing the AI Action Summit in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron, called for a global framework to regulate artificial intelligence. He emphasized how AI is shaping “our polity, our economy, our security and even our society.”
He pointed out that AI is evolving at an “unprecedented scale and speed” and urged global cooperation to set governance and standards that “uphold our shared values, address risks and build trust.” AI governance, he said, should not just manage risks but also “promote innovation and deploy it for the global good.”
Modi stressed that AI should be accessible to everyone, especially in the Global South, where “capacities are most lacking — be it compute power, talent, data, or financial resources.” He pushed for “open-source systems that enhance trust and transparency” so that AI benefits can be shared widely.
He also highlighted AI’s shortcomings, sharing an example: “If you upload your medical report to an AI app, it can explain in simple language, free of any jargon, what it means for your health. But, if you ask the same app to draw an image of someone writing with their left hand, the app will most likely draw someone writing with their right hand.” This, he said, shows how biases in AI training data need fixing.
On fears of job losses, Modi reassured that loss of jobs is AI’s most feared disruption, but history has shown that work does not disappear due to technology. Its nature changes and new types of jobs are created. He called for investment in training and reskilling workers for an AI-driven future.
Addressing AI’s high energy consumption, he said, the high energy intensity of AI needs to be looked into. This will require green power to fuel its future. AI needs to be sustainable not just in terms of clean energy but also in how efficiently it uses data and resources.
Citing India’s achievements, Modi highlighted how the country built a low-cost Digital Public Infrastructure for over 1.4 billion people. He added that India’s AI Mission is working on its Large Language Model (LLM) and has a strong AI talent pool.
Modi also announced that India will host the next AI Summit, reinforcing its leadership in AI. He also added that India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that the AI future is for good, and all.
The summit saw discussions on making AI more diverse, sustainable, and inclusive. Experts talked about ensuring “safe and trusted governance of AI” while making the most of its potential for public good.
Wrapping up, Modi addressed concerns about AI surpassing human intelligence but reassured, “no one holds the key to our collective future and shared destiny other than us humans.”
With India set to host the next AI Summit, this event in Paris marked an important step toward deeper global collaboration on AI regulation and innovation.
