DeepSeek AI integration in devices grows despite looming US sanctions

Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has continued to generate waves inside and outside the artificial intelligence industry. According to new reports, the company is now generating interest from several hi-tech manufacturing companies.

Chinese tech companies dealing in personal computers, robots, and electric vehicles have reportedly registered interest in the AI firm’s technology. However, there is still the issue of United States sanctions hanging over its head. Despite that, it has provided hope to companies in the country, thrive admist the threat of US actions.

Lenovo Group, the company behind the PC firm, UBTech, a robotics firm based in Shenzhen, and electric vehicle (EV) company Geely, are among the few that have already deployed the AI company’s technology in their products.

Lenovo leads tech firms adopting DeepSeek’s AI model

DeepSeek, the AI startup based in Hangzhou stole the spotlight after the release of its DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1 AI models. The AI models, especially the R1 made headlines in the AI industry, sending companies in Silicon Valley into a frenzy. This was majorly due to its impressive results, with experts noting that it mimicked the way the human mind will think.

Another issue that came with the development was the funds used to create the models, with the company using a tiny fraction of the budget of bigger AI companies in the industry. While the frenzy is now cooling down, the firm retains the attention of firms in the tech industry.

For instance, Lenovo said in a post on Weibo earlier this week that it has infused DeepSeek’s model into its Xiaotian AI assistant, which was built for its PCs. It mentioned that the deployment will ensure the enhancement of capabilities from understanding texts and generating codes to maths and reasoning skills.

Lenovo released its Xiaotian AI early last year, with the firm noting that it plans to roll the AI assistant out on a wider scale, infusing it into its tablets, smartphones and other tech products. It added that it will help users automate tasks, carrying out activities like summarizing and translating documents, and transcribing minutes taken during meetings. According to a source close to the company, Lenovo is also looking at a closer collaboration with the AI firm.

DeepSeek’s technology is attracting tech firms

The recent news of a collaboration between DeepSeek and Lenovo is coming in a week where the computer maker released a report titled the 2025 CIO Playbook. The report mentioned that the return on AI investment is the greatest setback to its adoption in organizations. The report highlighted that about 37% remain skeptical about the technology, while nine out of ten experts in the information technology industry in the firms said AI met their expectations.

President of Lenovo’s solutions and services group, Ken Wong, mentioned that AI requires efforts to move quickly. “AI is a marathon and a sprint – requiring parallel efforts to move quickly to modernize systems while ensuring the future-proofing of tech stacks,” he said.

He added that research showed that firms need to simplify some aspects concerning AI to enjoy the impact. “Our research shows organizations need to simplify the design, deployment, and integration of AI solutions to demonstrate the impact of these investments. This will instill greater confidence and fuel future investments,” Ken Wong added.

DeepSeek’s success in the AI industry seems to have helped firms globally, providing a level playing field for them at lower costs. UBTech, one of the largest makers of humanoid robots in China is also working on how to infuse DeepSeek’s AI models into its robot. According to news outlet The Paper, the deployment will help the robots understand instructions in a complicated real world environment, helping it to carry out tasks in factories.

On the other hand, EV maker Geely is integrating the reasoning model R1 into its Xinrui AI model. The company wants to incorporate the model into its self-made model to develop an in-vehicle AI model that would be able to predict and understand the needs of a motorist. According to TF Securities, DeepSeek’s significant cost advantage and open source approach provides better opportunities for AI downstream applications.
