Roger Ver, known as an early supporter of Bitcoin, reached out to former US President Donald Trump on Twitter, asking for help in preventing his possible extradition to the United States.
Ver claimed he could be extradited from Spain earlier this evening, where he could face up to 109 years in prison.
The charges stem from allegations that Ver failed to report capital gains from Bitcoin sales in 2017 and underreported the value of his Bitcoin holdings when he renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2014. So Ver is not actually a U.S. citizen.
Roger Ver is known in the crypto world for his support of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), a fork of Bitcoin that claims to have faster and cheaper transactions. Once a prominent advocate of Bitcoin, Ver switched his allegiance to Bitcoin Cash in 2017 following disagreements over Bitcoin’s scalability.
Despite his contributions to the crypto industry, Ver has faced legal challenges over the years, including accusations of tax evasion.
Although Trump has recently made cryptocurrency-friendly statements, it is unknown whether he will take any action against a non-US citizen.
