No Crypto Plans for Government, Says Musk

At a recent town hall in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Elon Musk addressed rising speculation surrounding Dogecoin and the U.S. government’s new Department of Government Efficiency. Rumors emerged earlier this year when the department’s website featured the Shiba Inu mascot commonly associated with Dogecoin. The timing led many to believe the government might be considering crypto integration.

However, Musk dismissed these claims. “There are no plans for the government to use Dogecoin or anything, as far as I know,” he stated. Musk explained that the department’s name—D.O.G.E.—was unintentionally aligned with the cryptocurrency. Initially considering the name “Government Efficiency Commission,” Musk opted for the more memorable “Department of Government Efficiency” based on suggestions from the online community.

Focusing on Streamlining Government Operations

According to Musk, the department was created to increase productivity and reduce bureaucratic waste across federal agencies. His primary goal is to improve government efficiency by 15%, with no intention of incorporating cryptocurrencies into federal systems.

Despite the lack of crypto involvement, Dogecoin saw a temporary boost in February following the mascot’s appearance on the department’s site. That momentum has since faded, with Dogecoin’s value dropping by 3.3% in the last 24 hours, according to CoinGecko.

Controversy and Criticism Surround the New Department

Musk’s leadership at the Department of Government Efficiency has not been without criticism. Since its inception, the department has identified what Musk claims are “billions of dollars” in inefficiencies, leading to significant layoffs and budget cuts across agencies like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Social Security Administration (SSA).

But not all outcomes have been positive. Reports of mistaken employee terminations in critical sectors—such as nuclear defense and Ebola response—have triggered widespread concerns. Critics have questioned the speed of staffing changes and their implications for essential government operations.

Musk Still Supports Crypto—Just Not for Federal Use

Although Musk denied plans to integrate Dogecoin into government programs, he remains a vocal supporter of cryptocurrency. Tesla previously accepted Dogecoin for certain payments, and Musk has played a pivotal role in the coin’s popularity. That said, he’s cautious about the financial risks, noting that meme coins can be “a bit like a casino.”

Musk’s clarification sets the record straight: while he continues to advocate for innovation and efficiency in public administration, crypto is not part of the plan—at least for now.
