Mynamar prime minister appears to be hacked, promoting national coin

The official X account of Min Aung Hlaing, the President, SAC Chairman, and Prime Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar appears to have been hacked.

The first suspicious post came earlier today when the account tweeted: “The Government of Myanmar will launch the first national coin today at 8:00 AM UTC.”

Other than shilling a potential memecoin, the post is a curious deviation from the Burmese prime minister’s usual activity. The X account seldom posts original content, primarily reposting local and geopolitical news and posts from international organizations.

After missing the initial token launch time without offering any explanation, the account rescheduled the launch for 3 PM UTC.

Another uncharacteristic move for the account that lends credence to the hack theory is that the suspected hackers have turned off comments, which is untypical for the Burmese prime minister’s account.

A former general in the Burmese army, Min Aung Hlaing has ruled Myanmar as the chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) since he took over in a February 2021 military coup. He became the country’s prime minister in August 2021 and assumed presidential duties in July 2024.

There is no official Myanmar government account on X has not offered any information about the suspected hack. The last post from the account was on February 18.
