The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the largest union group in the United States, has filed a lawsuit against the US Treasury and Secretary Scott Bessent. The lawsuit, lodged on February 3 in a Washington, DC, federal court, accuses the Treasury of illegally granting access to sensitive information to Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
According to the AFL-CIO, this unprecedented intrusion jeopardizes the privacy rights of millions of individuals. “People who must share information with the federal government should not be forced to share it with Elon Musk or his ‘DOGE,’” the union emphasized. The group argued that such disclosures violate federal laws and demanded an immediate halt to the practice.
Political Fallout and Security Concerns
The lawsuit comes in the wake of mounting scrutiny over DOGE, a program seemingly named after the popular cryptocurrency Dogecoin. Critics, including top Democrats, have raised alarm about Musk’s extensive involvement in federal operations. Senator Ron Wyden revealed that sources informed his office about Bessent granting DOGE “full access” to the Treasury’s payment system, which holds vast amounts of personal data such as names, Social Security numbers, bank details, and more.
On February 3, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Elizabeth Warren held a press conference to express their concerns. Schumer announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at blocking unauthorized access to Treasury systems. “DOGE is not a real government agency,” Schumer asserted. “It has no authority to make spending decisions or override federal law.”
Escalating Legal and Political Drama
Warren echoed these sentiments, stating that the system was effectively “at the mercy of Elon Musk.” She accused Musk of having the capability to exploit sensitive information for personal gain.
The controversy surrounding DOGE stems from former President Donald Trump’s initiative to cut federal spending, a task he entrusted to Musk. However, the alleged lack of oversight and transparency has fueled widespread opposition.
